Dr. Anil Menon, SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, an Indian-origin astronaut is one of the new joiners who will report for work in January 2022 for NASA’s 2021 Astronaut Candidate Class which will train for the agency’s future missions for space research.

Anil is a 45-year-old and was born and brought up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Ukrainian and Indian immigrant parents. Anil Menon has formerly served NASA as the crew flight surgeon for various excursions on the International Space Station (ISS).

Menon has also served the US Air Force and while he was a lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force, he got married to the gorgeous lady Anna Menon who works at the Space research organization SpaceX. They both have two children.

Dr. Anil was happy to share his love for Indian spice and Indian roots. He disclosed to the Indian Express most of the astronaut’s favorite food was Indian food because of its spices and flavors.

He said that “When people are in space, food tastes different because your nose gets stuffy because the fluid starts floating up there. So I have heard from a lot of astronauts that Indian food is their favorite food because it’s spicier. It’s a medical fact.”

Anil also mentioned that his father is from Kerala and he loves Kerala and he recently along with his family visited Kerala. He mentioned, “Kerala has a special spot in my heart. The people are so welcoming. They are so warm and inviting. Spending time in India really helped set me up for this job, because it is those same skills that I’ll need to apply as an astronaut in the future.”

Dr. Anil Menon contributed as a physician during the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Reno Air Show accident in 2011, and in the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. When he was in the US Air Force, he logged over 100 sorties in the F-15 fighter jet during the 45th Space Wing and 173rd Fighter Wing. He was also contributing as a flight surgeon and transported over 100 patients during the part of the critical care air transport team.

We are proud of Dr. Anil Menon. India has spread its root all over the world to the best scientists, doctors, astronauts, engineers and this shall not stop here.
